Downloadable Music Notation (Return to Top)

This is a listing of those sites we know of with downloadable music in the form of noation. Most of these sites provide graphic images of some sort, but some provide other means of viewing and printing the music. Adobe Acrobat files are the most common of these other types. The sites listed here are almost all collections of traditional tunes or early music where copyright is not an important issue. Realize though, that the producers of these images do maintain copyright on their edition/arrangement of the music. Be sure to give them credit if you use their materials and be sure to read carefully any information they provide about how they are willing to have the music used. When in doubt, contact the producer! Please contact Chuck Boody for suggested additions or changes.

This is a listing of some of the sites which support downloadable music in the form of ABC notation. ABC is a quick easy text based method of describing simple music like dance tunes. Programs exist for both the Mac and the PC that will turn ABC into music notation, and/or into MIDI files (at least on the PC). Further information about ABC is available at the ABC home page. These sites are collections of traditional tunes or early music where copyright is not an important issue. MIDI Music files (Return to Top)

This is a listing of some of the sites which support downloadable music in the form of MIDI files. MIDI files can be played through most sequencers on most computers and can be played directly through your browser using programs like Crescendo(TM) from LiveUpdate. They provide a neat backup band to play along with you as you practice, and since speed can be altered without changing the pitch they are an excellent tool for learning tunes by ear. These sites are collections of traditional tunes or early music where copyright should not be an important issue. Realize though, that the producers of these images do maintain copyright on their arrangement of the music. Be sure to give them credit if you use their materials and be sure to read carefully any information they provide about how they are willing to have the music used. When in doubt, contact the producer! Please contact Chuck Boody for suggested additions or changes.
