The Rt. Rev. Gary Gloster Retiring
The Rt. Rev. Gary Gloster will formally resign as Bishop Suffragan
of our Diocese of North Carolina, effective August 31. The
diocese is also establishing a "Fund for Children" to support
ministries and works that foster the welfare and benefit of
children. Checks should be written to the Episcopal Diocese of
North Carolina, earmarked "Gloster Children's Fund." After some
vacation, Bishop Gloster will continue his work in the diocese in the
fall as a half-time Assisting Bishop, still living in Charlotte.
Bishop Curry has also appointed the Rt. Rev. Chip Marble as half-time
Assisting Bishop with an office in Greensboro.
Farwell to Our Homeless Guests
This morning at breakfast we said good-bye to our IFC guests. It has
been a privilege to get to know these men during the two weeks they
have been housed at Chapel of the Cross. The Social Ministry Committee
would like to thank all those parishioners who have helped: those who
stayed overnight, worked 8-11 p.m., brought evening and morning snacks,
contributed financially, donated food and reading materials, and prayed
that all would run smoothly. "Well done, good and faithful
servants!" (Matthew 25:21) The Social Ministry Committee
would like to have any feedback about your experiences serving the
homeless in hopes that we can improve our future outreach. Please call
Sandra McClaskey or Bob Millikan, or put a
note in the Social Ministry box in the office.
Teacher & Leader Recruitment Begins
It is the time again to consider if you can share your time and
gifts of ministry in some educational program for the upcoming
2004-2005. There is a posting of openings on the Children and
Family Ministry Bulletin Board in the dining room. Please refer to
it for openings and then place your name under the heading "Yes, I
Am Interested". Gretchen Jordan will be in contact with you
or you may call or email her. Prayerfully consider where you might
serve this year. Our educational ministry needs many
volunteers! The orientation for Church School teachers will be on
Sunday, August 22, from 10:30 - 1:00. Lunch and childcare provided.
Church School Registration
All children and youth are asked to register this year. Records
have become outdated and additional information including your
baptismal date is wanted. A form was included in the August
CrossRoads; another will be sent in the Parent Newsletter to
families with children 5th grade and under or you may pick
up one in the main office. Church School will begin earlier than usual
this year with an intergenerational gathering in the chapel on August
29 at 10:20 a.m. No classes on September 5, reconvening on
September 12.
Foyer Dinner Groups
Interested in meeting new people? Join a Foyer Dinner group where
parishioners get to know other parishioners while sharing a meal about
once a month. Dinners are casual, cooking is shared, and participants
take turns hosting the meals. The host plans the menu and provides just
the main dish. Sign up sheets can be found in the dining room and
should be returned to the office when completed. Responses need to be
in by September 12. For more information, contact Jane Steenstra .
Annual Parish BBQ
The Chapel of the Cross's Annual Parish BBQ is scheduled for August
29, 2004, at 6:30 p.m. This wonderful celebration of fellowship will
follow the 5:15 service and will be held on the parish grounds with a
complete meal catered by Gillis's BBQ. A tradition that accompanies the
BBQ is a parish food drive. In thanksgiving for our bounty, please
bring three food items for the IFC Food Pantry. Tickets for the BBQ
will be sold after Sunday services starting today and are priced as
follows: Adults-$12, Children under 10-$6, University Students-free.
PLEASE NOTE: on August 22 we will tell the caterer how many people to
prepare for; therefore, all tickets must be purchased by August
22.
Election of Convention Delegates
The Vestry will elect delegates to the Diocesan Convention at its
September meeting. The convention will be January 20-22, 2005, at the
Sheraton Imperial in RTP. Delegates serve for three years while
alternates serve for one year. If you would like to be considered
for a position as delegate or alternate, please contact Dick Taylor .

Weekday Young Adult Group
If you are a young adult and find yourself wondering what it means
to be a Christian in the world today, this group will be a welcoming
place to ask those challenging questions. We have begun a six-week
sharing group that meets Mondays until August 16 from 5:30-6:45 p.m. in
the parlor. If you have questions or would like to join us, please
contact either the Rev. Vicky Jamieson-Drake or Mary Agnes
Rawlings at the church. Group size will be limited to 8
participants.
Parish Breakfast
Join other parishioners for breakfast on August 8 and continue a
Chapel of the Cross summer tradition. Ken Stynes will prepare a
traditional southern breakfast between the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services.
Prices are $3 for adults, $1 for children ages five-ten, and children
under five are free.
Youth Inquirers' Class
The Youth Inquirers' Class is for young people in high school to
explore the promises that may have been made for them and to them
before they could answer, and what they mean today, and to consider
confirmation. If you are beginning high school in August or older, you
are eligible to participate. The class will begin with a dinner
for youth, parents and leaders on Sunday, August 22, with classes
beginning on September 12. Please call Bill Joyner to
make sure you and your parents are on our list!
Stewardship Opportunities
