NC Center for Women in Public Service
The Forum was instrumental in calling attention to the lack of women
in public positions, and its 1996
report on gender equity on boards and
commissions led directly to the 1998 legislation that says
appointments
should
proportionately
represent each gender. In 2003 it collaborated with Peace College to
establish the NC Center for Women in Public Service, www.nccwps.org,
to address the "supply" side of this problem and prepare women
to seek and serve in public office. The picture is of the graduating
class of the Center's 2004 Summer Institute. The Women's Forum continues
as a major funder of the Center, and Forum members serve in several
leadership roles with the Center.
Young Adult Leadership Award
Each year since 1987, the Forum's Young Adult Leadership Award (YALA)
has honored a young* North Carolinian, who has demonstrated
leadership in improving the lives of North
Carolinians, particularly women. The areas of leadership considered
for this award include the fields of community service, the arts,
science, physical fitness, health care, family, education, business and
the
public arena. The finalists
- receive a certificate of recognition,
- are matched with Forum members
who serve as mentors, and
- become Associate Members of the Froum.
The YALA recipient also receives a plaque and
$500 cash award.
The award was established by Jan Proctor, a charter member of the Forum,
in memory of her son, Robert D. Proctor.

NC Women United
The Women's Forum is a founding
member of NC Women United, www.ncwu.org,
a coalition of progressive organizations and individuals
working to achieve the full political, social, and economic equality
of all women across North Carolina. NCWU continues the Women's Legislative
Agenda process initiated by the Women's Forum and sponsors Women's Agenda
Assemblies, Women's Advocacy Days at the NC Legislature, and other projects
that build women's power through grassroots activism, community organizing,
legislative advocacy, and engagement in the political process.
Encouraging appointments for women The Forum encourages the appointment of qualified women to administrative
positions, boards of trustees and other positions where women are traditionally
under-represented. The Forum also has established the economic
advancement of women as a program priority and routinely addresses the
issues publicly. The Forum also works to position our members for
seats on private boards and commissions.
For more information on appointments by the NC Governor, see the governor's
web site.
