2004 Young Adult Leadership Award ResultsEach year since 1987, the Women's Forum has honored a young North Carolinian between the ages of 18 and 35, who has demonstrated leadership in improving the lives of North Carolinians, especially female. The Forum is pleased to announce 2004 YALA finalists and the award recipient. Congratulations to all of these exceptional young women. YALA Winner for 2004Angela Baylis received her DC from Parker College of
Chiropractic, Dallas, TX. She has She hosts an annual “Kids Day” event providing parents with Children’s Identification Kits, which include finger printing, photo ID, DNA ID through hair samples and other critical information. Angela volunteers weekly at the Raleigh Rescue Mission. She offers free trigger point massages to participants at many of the Breast Cancer and Diabetes fundraising walks and runs. She donates her time working at Health Fairs. Angela mentors young adults, especially women, who are pursuing a career in the Chiropractic field through a work shadowing program. She is a member of the National Association of Women Business Owners and mentors other young women who are starting businesses. Recently Angela was one of the sponsors of a benefit concert for flood relief for Asheville residents.
YALA Finalists for 2004Jennifer Bumgarner has a prestigious academic background. After graduating magna cum laude from Wake Forest University, she was selected as a Rhodes scholar which led her to graduate study and her MSc by research in Social Policy at the University of Oxford, Oxford, England. Professionally, she has served as Executive Director for the NC Alliance for Economic, Justice. This past fall she was the Campaign Manager, McCrodden for Justice Committee. She has worked in other campaigns as a volunteer. Jennifer is serving as First Vice President and on the Board of Directors of NC Women United. She compiled and wrote the NC Women United Budget Report Card for the 2003 Legislative Session. Internationally, she was the Project Coordinator for the Ilitha Project which helped raise money to re-build schools in a rural South African township. In addition she worked one summer with the International Red Cross and the League of Women of Ukraine. Jennifer is familiar with the work of the Women’s Forum as she is a graduate of the 2004 NC Center for Women and Public Service Summer Institute. Amy Fisher is a graduate of Mountain State University in Beckley, WV. She has a minor in Psychology and a concentration in Religious Studies. She is employed as the Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Center in Hickory. Under her leadership, the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) produced the first County-wide Protocol for responding to victims of sexual assault. She is presently a member of the statewide SART Advisory Task Force which is revising the statewide “Protocol for Responding to Sexual Violence.” Amy serves on the Board of Directors of the NC Coalition Against Sexual Assault . Amy is active in her church’s youth programs and also leads Bible studies for the women’s ministry of her church. She went to Thailand on a mission trip in the late 90’s to teach English to young tribal girls and established the curriculum for the preschool at a home for HIV positive women and children.
