WHEREAS, North Carolina made history in 2000 by electing
its first woman lieutenant governor; and
WHEREAS, the North Carolina General Assembly is considering
a bill which would allow party leaders to select the lieutenant gubernatorial
candidates and effectively eliminate the participation of citizens
in selecting their lieutenant governor; and
WHEREAS, the people of this state now have the right
to elect the lieutenant governor, who stands in line to succeed the
governor and, therefore, holds a position for which the people have
the right to vote; and
WHEREAS, we believe the freedom to nominate and elect
the lieutenant governor is a precious right not to be destroyed by
the vote of a few;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Women's Forum
of North Carolina supports the nomination and election of the lieutenant
governor by the people and opposes legislation which would provide
that the lieutenant gubernatorial candidates be chosen by their respective
parties and run on the same ticket as the gubernatorial candidates.
ADOPTED BY THE UNANIMOUS VOTE OF THE BOARD, THIS THE
9TH DAY OF MARCH 2001.
