How would you like to get $28-30 worth of
groceries for less than $16? What if you could "be in service to your
neighbor" while you did this? SHARE is a national nonprofit organization with affiliates in all 50 states. Our local SHARE group takes orders and payments from participants at the first of every month and sends them to the North Carolina affiliate in Fayetteville. The orders go to buyers in the Midwest who bargain for large quantities of groceries. Typical items obtained each month are meats, fresh vegetables, onions, potatoes, and other staples such as beans and rice. The food meets the same standards as food on the grocery store shelf. It reaches local distribution centers at the end of the month and we pick it up from a center in Durham. The cost for each package is $15.65 (which includes the cost of shipping and tax) plus two hours of community service. Community service is defined as "anything you do as a volunteer, with no money paid, for someone who is not related to you or for an organization." Church work (such as teaching Sunday School or singing in a choir) counts. There is no age limit on the person giving the service and families are encouraged to share the responsibility for service. Participation is open to anyone who is interested, regardless of income. If you would like to know more, or to obtain an order form, call Anne Skaife (942-3489) or Linda McDonough (942-3108).
