Hello "Baidarkites" I've moved into the "boat building" mood again and
once more need the advice of fellow builders on this list. I'm in the very
beginning stages of building a "Bering Strait 2- Hole Kayak" (See David
Zimmerly's Web page for drawings). As a matter of fact, just today I
finished drilling the rib holes in the gunwales. In the past I covered the
boat with polyester and then coated that with polyurethane followed by GACO
UA 7000. (recommended by Bill Lowe, and I REALLY like the result). I intend
to cover the boat with polyester this time as well, but I'm looking for a
different coating. The last time I purchased UA 7000 it cost me $200.00 for
the 7000 including taxes and shipping. I like the durability of the final
product but I really need to find something that doesn't cost an arm and a
leg. I communicated with another list member about using epoxy on the
polyester. His experience with epoxy as the coating seems to be positive
with a good skin that, at this time, is over 2 years old and holding up well.
One of the good things about using epoxy rather than some exotic coating is
that it's readily available and wouldn't create any major problems in the
event of a needed repair. Any other recommendations for newly discovered
coating types would be greatly appreciated, especially if someone has
personally used them on a boat. Russell
