Previous Years’ Photos

Each year, the NCPCA hosts a major fund raising event. Peace Corps Night (formerly known as Africa Night) raises funds for sustainable development  projects sponsored by NC volunteers. Most of the projects we choose support the Peace  Corps Partnership program

The 2011 Recipient of the Peace Corps Night proceeds is:

Village Aqueduct and Rainwater Catchment System

PANAMA MAP
The summary below was provided by the Peace Corps Volunteer and the community administering this project.

This community is strung across the coast of the archipelago of Bocas del Toro Province. Since the construction of the aqueduct in the early 1980s, the population has doubled. This drastic increase in population, the age of this PVC water system and its poor construction have caused the infrastructure to become insufficient and obsolete. Many people now rely on standing water wells and buckets of contaminated creek water for their daily consumption.

We propose the construction of an aqueduct and rainwater catchment system that will provide a safe water source for all of the 200 community members. In conjunction with the construction project, we will re-form the water committee, making it more participatory and effective in the daily maintenance of the new system. We will also provide comprehensive education and training for all community members about water safety and the maintenance of the water lines. The new system will provide the infrastructure to insure that the increasing population will have safe drinking water for the next 25 years.

Though geographically disperse, this tight-knit community has pledged it’s time to perform all of the labor for the aqueduct. They will also provide fish and vegetables from their personal farms to fulfill their contribution to the PCPP project.

We are requesting $ 12,410.22 to be used to buy and transport the necessary materials and tools to the community in order to complete this project. In addition, the community will contribute $7,040 of labor and food for workdays

Peace Corps Night Silent Auction information
For the past three years, the North Carolina Peace Corps Association has held a Silent Auction to raise money for the Peace Corps Partnership Project of a Volunteer from North Carolina. The Silent Auction has become one of the principle money-raising events at Africa Night with items like a beach condominium, mountain casita, original artwork, heirloom plants, and gift cards from area businesses, arts and crafts from around the world, antiques, and the unusual, among items offered for auction.
Our past success is directly attributable to the hard work, generosity, and imagination of NCPCA members and friends, who have spent time and energy getting auction items together.  We encourage you to begin the process of gathering your own items for donation, soliciting for items from businesses, friends and family, using the 501(C)(3) letters, linked here.  When submitting a item for auction, please provide a paragragh describing the item and any qualifications on it (i.e. beach house rental for these specific weeks)
If you cannot attend Africa Night or if you would rather have your auction item/s processed before Africa Night, go to our web site to select an officer or Africa Night Volunteers who lives near you and email that person to ask about your dropping off your donation/s before April 25, 2011.
