CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS:

Coastal Exploration!

In celebration of this year's conference theme, Sand, Sea, and EENC, we are extending our fabulous Eco-reception to include an entire Coastal Exploration. As environmental educators, we understand that the best way to learn about our coastal environment is to experience it firsthand. You don't want to miss this fabulous learning and networking opportunity! Read all about it.

Fabulous Speakers:

Jean Beasley, Director
Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital

Friday, November 7
7:30-8:30 p.m.
Jean Beasley's labor of love, the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, opened its doors in 1997. Jean and her crew of dedicated volunteers have treated more than 200 turtles for injuries including fractured flippers, hook and net entanglements, and viral and fungal illnesses.

Beasley's efforts have earned her international recognition. Last year, she was elected to the board of directors of the International Sea Turtle Society, a global organization dedicated to advancing knowledge of sea turtle biology and conservation. In 2007 Jean received Animal Planet's 2007 Hero of the Year award; selected from thousands of nominations for her work.

As a retired teacher, Jean believes in the power of education and has developed an extensive program to involve volunteers of all ages. Learn about the turtles, hear their stories, and learn what you can do to help.

Dr. Stanley Riggs, Professor of coastal and marine geology
East Carolina University

Saturday, November 8
8:00 - 9:00 pm
"Climate Change and the North Carolina Coastal System - Past, Present and Future"

Dr. Riggs has been doing research on the North Carolina coast since 1964. His research extends from rivers, estuarine and barrier island systems to the inshore waters of the continental shelf. Dr. Riggs has been actively involved in numerous technical coastal resource issues at the federal, state, and local levels that included appointments to many commissions, task forces, panels, and committees. These appointments, as well as many of his numerous publications, have dealt directly with integrating scientific understanding with the management of coastal systems. He has been involved in such critical issues as climate change and sea-level rise, shoreline erosion, hazard zone delineation, inlet dynamics, water quality, and habitat preservation and beach nourishment.

Learn what the future holds for coastal Carolinians as sea level rises. As environmental educators Dr. Rigg's research can improve your ability to help others better understand the impacts of climate change.
