DPNA Meeting Minutes

DPNA Monthly Meeting, November 9, 2006

In attendance : Dan Read (president), Pam Campa (treasurer), Claire Doyle (secretary), Marty Jarrell (Member At-Large), Barry Ragin (President Ex Officio), Peter & Esther Bent, Sara Dowdee, Nancy and Alan McNabb, Maria Mangano.

Share your Christmas: At the last board meeting, it was agreed that we would increase the amount given by $50 and give to a family of three. Carol Donin volunteered to do the shopping.

Treasurer’s report: There is $1932 in bank. Upcoming expenses include the newsletter, Share your Christmas, and luminarias.

1700 shawnee: Esther said that the city could have done more if she’d filed an affidavit. The city could have been more forthcoming with the information. Dan thinks they didn’t because it means more work for the city. Barry is going to the next PAC2 meeting: he thinks that’s a good venue for the issue of city’s response to citizen complaints. There have also been issues with police and animal control response re: dog complaints.

Bark in the Park : Dan gave kudos to Marty and company for the Bark in the Park. We would like to do it earlier in the year with more notice next time.

Bathhouse update: Someone in General Services is looking over the contract; we are looking at a 10-year lease. It’s moving slowly but it is moving. Barry asked about DPPI. Dan explained what DPPI is, especially. that it is an incorporated non-profit. The city would like to acquire DPPI property on Roxboro by the RR tracks. The city has right-of-way regardless. Esther has been in discussion with Bill Triplett and Andrew Preiss (all DPPI board members). Dan suggested incorporating DPNA as a non-profit (501-3c) because that would allow us to get tax-deductible donations and grants. Barry said that non-profits can hang signs on telephone poles in Durham. We may be able to piggyback on Forest Hills NA, which is a non-profit now, for the purpose of hanging signs.

Colonial Village: There was a question regarding a community gathering in Colonial Village this week. It was sparsely attended; apparently an attack on an immigrant family was the impetus.

Christmas potluck: We need to reserve a space. 2nd Thursday in December is Dec. 14.

Luminarias: Night of Lights will be Dec. 10 with rain date of Dec. 17. Durham Women’s Club does the luminarias around the reservoir; Watts-Hillandale usually does it at the same time. Barry likes not necessarily doing it at the same time so that people can visit the other neighborhoods. We need volunteers to help sell luminarias. Somebody needs to order supplies. Esther will find out about sand delivery.

Newsletter: We need it to be in people’s hands a week before luminaries. Topics: Russian guests at Dave and Kathy’s, Bark in the Park. Maybe an ad from Compare Foods? Whitt Auto Care?

The next DPNA meeting will be the Holiday Potluck on Thursday, December 14.
