DPNA Meeting Minutes

Regular Monthly Meeting
June 12, 2003

Board Members Present: Carol Donin (President), Andrew Preiss (Vice President), Rob Dilworth (Secretary), Barry Ragin (At-Large Member)

Neighbors Present: Claire Doyle, David Eustice, Jesse Eustice, Claire Hyman

Guest: Richard Mullinax (President, Old North Durham
Neighborhood Association)

Topics of Discussion
1. DPNA-ONDNA Picnic
Final preparations were discussed with Richard Mullinax for the DPNA-ONDNA picnic.

2.Neighborhood Sign Committee
A committee was formed to discuss the creation of a Duke Park neighborhood sign (or maybe signs). The committee will include Andrew Preiss (chair), Carol Donin, and Claire Doyle. Frank Hyman has also expressed interest in joining the committee, which will discuss the possible need for more fund-raising, the probable costs of completing the project, the feasibility of having more than one sign, and the location of a sign or signs.

3. DPNA Purchasing Policy
The Board agreed to the following purchasing policy: Any board member may make a purchase of $50 or less without preapproval by the Board. (Receipts for these—and all—purchases must be submitted to the treasurer before reimbursement.) Any purchase above $50, however, will have to be preapproved by the Board at a DPNA meeting.

4. Park Update
Andrew Preiss updated the DPNA on the park renovations. Apparently, Tim Grant, the interim director of Durham's Department of Parks and Recreation, will probably leave his position to work for another municipality. This is a step
backward, but at this stage, it's difficult to know the impact Grant's departure will have.

Andrew discussed the current renovation plans, which include closing off the loop and repaving it, installing new grills, replacing old park benches, providing a drinking fountain, installing an electrical outlet, putting in a new drinking fountain, adding new swings, and building a sign kiosk near the entrance.

The contract for renovation will go before the city council in August; if things proceed smoothly, this means construction might begin in September.

5. July 4 Picnic
Some preliminary planning details for the July 4 picnic were discussed.

6. Open Discussion
*Colonial St.-Camden Ave. Area. David Eustice, Jesse Eustice, and Claire Hyman discussed some issues of concern in the area of Colonial St. and Camden Ave., such as overoccupancy of a rental unit.

*Geer Street Cemetery. Jesse Eustice provided an update on the Geer Street Cemetery and said there would be a planning meeting in the near future. She'll post information on the DPNA listserv.
