DPNA Meeting Minutes

Regular Monthly Meeting
May 8, 2003

Board Members Present: Carol Donin (President), Andrew Preiss (Vice President), Esther Bent (Treasurer), Rob Dilworth (Secretary), Pam Campa (At-Large Member), Barry Ragin (At-Large Member)

Neighbors Present: Jessie Eustice, David Eustice, Ernie Mills

Guest: Len Stanley, Social Chair, Old North Durham Neighborhood Association

Topics of Discussion
1. Traffic Calming Update—Barry Ragin
Barry gave a presentation about the DPNA's traffic calming proposal and discussed its major points—enforcing existing ordinances (e.g., speed limits, no left turn areas); getting speed-bump petitions accepted and implemented by the city; ensuring pedestrian safety at Knox and Roxboro; resolving problems at the Roxboro/Markham/Mangum crossover; adding sidewalks and a pocket park on Avondale; etc. Jessie Eustice said that she would see if the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provides community grants that might help with traffic calming initiatives.

2.Fund-Raising Initiatives—Barry Ragin
Barry reported that the DPNA earned $150 (net) from the Stone Bros. and Byrd fund-raiser and that we may try to do another fund-raiser with them in November or December. The DPNA yard
sale earned $250 (net). Barry proposed creating a sign committee to look at the costs, design, materials, and placement of permanent neighborhood signs for Duke Park. His proposal was accepted. A preliminary report will be due from the committee, which now includes Andrew Preiss, by the June DPNA meeting.

3. Duke Park-Old North Durham Picnic—Len Stanley
Len Stanley talked about the details of the Duke Park-Old North Durham Picnic on 6/15, 5-8 P.M. The picnic will be a potluck. It will probably have live music and some "goofball" games.

4. Other Agenda Items
Ernie Mills provided an update on the Durham Rescue Mission. The current move-in date for residents is October 15, 2003. Ernie asked if the DPNA would be interested in helping with the landscaping of the facility's grounds. The board agreed to post a call for volunteers at the appropriate time.

Esther Bent said that she would start planning for the Back-to-School Jam fairly soon but hasn't set a date.

Jessie Eustice discussed a project for cleaning up the Geer St. Cemetery, which may need volunteers, too.

The April DPNA was a potluck dinner. No business was conducted.
