DPNA Meeting Minutes

Open Board Meeting
January 13, 2005

Board members present: Barry Ragin (president), Pam Campa (treasurer), Claire Doyle (secretary), David Eustice (member-at-large)

This meeting was held at the home of David Eustice.

Park renovations:

The park renovation is in progress! Portions of the park are closed off to visitors while they re-grade and install the new playground equipment, including a 32 foot tall slide. Andrew Preiss is setting up a meeting with Beth Timson at Parks & Rec to discuss next steps with the pool area and the bathhouse. This meeting will be scheduled sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. There is a chance the city may be willing to rent the bathhouse to DPNA for $1 per year, but there is also a chance they will simply tear it down. The issue is bringing it up to code, the expense of such, making it usable for something other than a bathhouse, and liability. Claire Doyle presented documents from the Historical Preservation Society of Durham about getting a structure declared a historic site. David Eustice will look into the history of the bathhouse and what would be involved in having it declared a historic site, which would prevent the city from tearing it down, but could potentially hamper making drastic renovations, also.

Traffic calming

A multi-neighborhood traffic calming meeting is scheduled for 1/19, including the Arts & Business Coalition of Downtown, Downtown Durham Inc. and neighborhood associations from Old North Durham, Five Points, Trinity Park and Duke Park. No city officials are involved at this point. All of the organizations listed have been talking to the city individually; this is an effort to pool efforts, get consistent information from city (different people have gotten different stories from the city) and make sure efforts in one neighborhood don't adversely affect another.

Fundraising

Kathy Bartlett will be organizing the spring yard sale, date TBD but it will most likely be a weekend in April.

Barry Ragin will check with Stone Bros, and Byrd about doing a spring fundraiser with them again this year.

Claire Doyle reported on the Duke Park Store. Of the $233.50 worth of merchandise purchased for selling at neighborhood events, $126.45 has been sold to neighbors, leaving a deficit of $107.05. $47 in profits have been made in direct online sales. To date, the following items have been purchased (both online and offline): 7 hoodies, 4 tiles, 3 mugs, 2 t-shirts and one each of the sweatshirt, dog t-shirt, teddy bear and frisbee. Coffee mugs, tile/trivets, one beer stein and one t-shirt are still available for purchase directly from Claire; those and all other items are available at www.cafepress.com/dukepark.

DPNA received a thank you letter from share your christmas. Gifts were given to a single mother with 3 kids.

Resolutions

A motion was passed to extend DPNA support for the City of Durham continuing to allow the Alliance of Aids Services the use of the Durham Armory at a reduced or subsidized fee to continue producing the "Drag Bingo" fundraiser.

The yard waste proposal was approved. This proposal is also up for approval by INC and several other neighborhood associations. Forest Hills NA has already approved it.

The February DPNA meeting will be held on Feb. 10 at Grace Baptist Church. Phil Loziuk from the Durham Dept. of Transportation will be invited to speak but is not yet confirmed.
