I hope everyone is having a great summer. Although snow is still several months away, ExComm and committee members are hard at work preparing for the upcoming season.
CONVENTIONS
Fall Conference is closer than you think! October 23-25, 2009 should be peak leaf season in the Great Smokies, and you will be hard pressed to find a room rate cheaper than the one provided to Crescent! Knoxville Ski Club and Crescent are planning a great weekend of fun...both learning and playing; so plan on sending more than just your reps to this great weekend in the Great Smokies. Michelle will be issuing more details soon. You can download registration information at www.crescentskicouncil.org.
TRIPS
Registrations are underway for both Crescent ski trips. Race and Ski Camp is at Steamboat from December 5 - 12, 2009. Crescent's other major trip is to Whitefish, Montana from January 16-23, 2010 and includes a day trip to Fernie in Canada. You must have a passport to travel between the United States and Canada so make sure you have one. You don't want to miss the fun! Information regarding both trips is on Crescent's web site.
RACING
Racing has organized a FAM to Bryce Mountain (in Virginia) for Race Directors and Race Workers. This trip will be a site inspection for future races. Ron Scott, Racing Chair, should have more information soon.
Crescent members have been taking advantage of the Subaru VIP program. Ron advises that he has ordered 6 or 7 Subaru VIP papers in the last 50 days. Be sure to advise your members of this program. It's an excellent opportunity to purchase a great vehicle at a great price. I know this personally because Gary and I bought the new Subaru Forrester last fall, and we love it! If you have any questions about the program, please contact Ron.
MEMBER SERVICES
Standard Comment: Please don't forget to advise Bruce McMurray, Crescent's database administrator, of any changes in your officers and chairs. His address is snowdawgasoc@bellsouth.net, It's critical that ExComm reaches the correct individuals in your clubs.
Member Services has been contacted by one of the founders of the Chattanooga Ski Club who is trying to contact Dartmouth graduates. If you can help him, please do. His request is as follows:
"I am contacting you as the founder of the Chattanooga Ski Club in 1969 and was one of the early organizers of the Crescent Ski Council because I have volunteered to help a group of Dartmouth College alumni who are writing a book on the history of skiing and the development of the sport, the industry, and the ski clubs. The book will be published at year end and so time is getting short. I believe Chattanooga was the 8th Southern ski club. Now there are about thirty.
Specifically, I need your help in identifying any significant founders or leaders of your ski club who are (or were) Dartmouth alums. I realize you may have no idea what colleges your major club leaders attended. I also realize you are probably one or two generations removed from your own founders. If you know of any past or present ski club members who attended Dartmouth I am asking if you will pass this inquiry on to them, and copy me on that forwarded email if you would, please. Won’t you please take a moment to either Reply back to me saying you have read this and can or cannot help?
This will be a major book on skiing, very comprehensive, and I believe your more avid club members will find it interesting reading. It is not about Dartmouth so much as about the sport we love. It is being written by some Dartmouth alumni who realized how many and varied are the connection to this college, including the leaders of the 10th Mountain Division in WW II and the development of Vail ski resort.
You can imagine how difficult it is to identify past and present Dartmouth leaders on local ski clubs. We have to cast a wide net. The ski club movement began around the same time many national corporations were moving South or establishing regional headquarters in the growing South, such as in the Raleigh Durham area and Atlanta, bringing many northerners to the sunny South with them, young adults who loved skiing and needed an economical way to arrange ski trips to the Rockies and Europe.
I am responsible for contributing an article on the Southern ski club development in the late 1960’s and the 1970’s and beyond and recognize noteworthy contributions in these clubs by Dartmouth graduates. Those in your club will be glad you led me to them, so please think it through and see if anyone in your club can help me with this. I will be happy to interview them by phone or work by email as they prefer, and it will not take much of their time.
It may be very productive for you to put a blurb in your next email newsletter or on your club web site to help us smoke out the needles in the haystack, if you will consider that.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and decide whether to simply reply or also pass this request along to one or more of your members. Time is of the essence. Please let me hear from you one way or the other so I will know the status of your club’s response. I must submit a final copy in August.

ADMINISTRATIVE
Margaret Crum and I will be attending the National Ski Council Federation annual meeting from August 20 - 23 in Reno, Nevada. Now that should be hot! I'll really be thinking of snow then! Lisa Beregi also will be attending as NSCF secretary. Information that we get at the meeting will be disseminated at the Fall Conference.
I probably won't issue the August update until the Labor Day weekend. I realize that isn't in August, but I have major work deadlines in August, and the NSCF trip eats into my available time. I'll have much more time to work on an update over a long weekend. If anything major arises in the meantime, I'll make it a point to pass the information to you ASAP.
Enjoy the remainder of the summer and start making plans to participate in all of Crescent's great fall and winter activities!
