Hi Everyone! I know that it's May, but I simply didn't have time to issue the April update last week. Now that I'm finally issuing it, let's see what's happening!
CONVENTIONS
If you were at the Spring Convention, you already know that it was FABULOUS!!! If you weren't there, you should have been; you missed a great time! All twenty-two clubs in CSC attended, the weather was great, the trade show and meetings were well-attended, and the Beach Olympics were enjoyed by many! I'm biased, but I truly believe the 40th Anniversary Celebration was a huge success. The 40th's Planning Committee did an incredible job researching Crescent's history, gathering information and items, and putting it all together. Faith Campbell of Coastal took our results, mixed them with her extraordinary decorating talents, and created a memorable celebration. I can't thank her and her assistants enough! The displays by CSC, Racing, and the clubs were impressive. At times, I wasn't sure the clubs would really get into decorating their tables, but I saw some amazing displays at the party. Thank you so much for participating in CSC's celebration! As always, Michelle Shuford and Bryan Bobo did a wonderful job organizing the convention, and Jim Bennett did an excellent job attracting vendors to the trade show. Thanks also to the many members of CSC who volunteered before and during the convention.
Competition winners included:
Scrapbook - Augusta
Newsletter -
Huntsville
Web Site - Palmetto
Beach Olympics - Greater Charleston
Everyone seemed to enjoy the 40th Anniversary grocery bags. I saw many of them in use during the weekend. Unfortunately, several of them came apart at the seams. Please pass along to your members that they probably should re-enforce the seams with additional stitching. At a minimum, they should look at them closely to make sure the seams are holding. I would hate for someone to be carrying breakable items in the bag and have it come apart. The Fall Conference will be October 23 - 25, 2009, at Gatlinburg, TN. The Knoxville Ski Club is working with Michelle to organize the weekend. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend; registration information already has been issued by Michelle, and I've included a copy here. The conference is a great opportunity to learn more about the workings of the council and to gain and share knowledge about operating your clubs. It's also just a fun weekend for those who don't have to attend the various Saturday meetings. Gatlinburg offers a tremendous amount of shopping and the fall foliage should be fabulous. The Saturday night party, while not quite as elaborate as the one at the Spring Convention, includes food and a DJ. We always have a good time!
TRIPS
Crescent's 2010 Ski Week trip was rolled out at the Spring Convention. It's to
Whitefish, Montana January 16 - 23, 2010). Information for the trip has been provided to all club trip directors and will be posted on Crescent's web site shortly. If your trip leaders have questions about that trip, have them contact Lisa Beregi, DRLAB88@aol.com, or Sara Ford, sara@sportsamerica.com.
Crescent's Race and Ski Camp will be held at Steamboat from December 5 - 12, 2009. Maximum participation is 350 members due to lodging and event facility capacities. As usual, John Casey is our excellent trip leader. Details of the trip should be available within a month.
RACING
Be sure to check out the NASTAR National Championships in Steamboat at nastar.com or in Ski Racing magazine. Four-year-old Sarah Goode, Raleigh Ski & Outing Club, won the Race of Champions, female division. Congratulations Sarah!
MEMBER SERVICES
We had some problems with Crescent's database, and unfortunately some of the president and trips chair names were incorrect in the Spring Convention Guide. I think the problem has been resolved so hopefully this update is going to the current president and board representatives. ExComm does most of its communications to the clubs via email so it's critical that clubs provide updates to Bruce McMurray, snowdawgasoc@bellsouth.net, whenever an officer or chair changes. If you are no longer your club's rep or president, please forward this email to the appropriate individuals and make sure that Bruce is sent current information.
ADMINISTRATIVE
Crescent officers were elected at the Spring Convention BOD meeting. Margaret Crum (VP), Pat Harvey (Secretary), and I ran for office again. Rod Davis, CSC's Treasurer, chose not to run; Bill Melton (Asheville) volunteered to tackle the treasurer's position and was included in the slate of officers presented to the BOD. The slate was approved unanimously. The BOD also approved the four returning committee chairs. Thank you for believing that we are doing a good job, and we will continue to strive to keep Crescent successful. As I stated at the meeting, however, I will not run for office next year. At this time, Margaret Crum and Pat Harvey have voiced a willingness to move up to president and vice president respectively. Please start thinking NOW about next year and either volunteer yourself or help us find members who are willing to step into leadership positions. Any of the current officers and committee chairs will be happy to discuss their positions with you and explain how ExComm really functions. You will find that it isn't as difficult or time-consuming as you may think. I want to take this opportunity to thank Rod Davis for his years of service as treasurer. Maintaining financial records, filing taxes, and having independent audits of our books performed are all important functions. Trying to explain finances, especially budgets, can be difficult. Rod always got the jobs done, and we will miss him. Thanks! Please distribute these updates to your members, via email or by placing them on your web site. Several members have told me that they have learned about Crescent activities through these updates and that they think they are valuable. Let's keep our members informed! That's it for now.
