Today

Thompson's Child & Family Focus Summer Clothing Drive!

Please stop by the table in the dining room today and pick up a heart (or two!) for one of our sponsored children. Buy the items listed and return them to the parish office, unwrapped, by Sunday, June 8. This year, we have a great need for khaki shorts, polo shirts, sneakers, and short socks, along with gift cards from department stores. Please help our efforts -- your generosity will make a tremendous impact on the summer experience of our sponsored children!

God And Me Informational Meeting

There will be a brief informational meeting for all students interested in the God and Me program and their parents. The meeting will be held in the library immediately after Sunday School today. God and Me is for second and third graders and explores the core tenets of Christian faith through readings, group discussion, and hands on activities. If you have questions, please contact Frank McBride at (call office for number) or StratAdvan@aol.com.

Episcopal Youth Community

No EYC today! Enjoy some family time and pamper your mom! EYC will meet again next week for a potluck in the basement at 6:00 and then watch the Junior Choir Concert. Please bring a dish to share! As the school year comes to an end - so does our EYC year. We will celebrate the year on June 1 at the Conrad's house. Watch your email and bulletin for details. Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions, celebrations, or concerns.

This Week

Penick Village Offering

Penick Village is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. Located in Southern Pines, Penick Village is named in honor of Bishop Edwin Anderson Penick. In 1957, the Diocese of North Carolina made a commitment to raise money on Mother's Day to successfully build The Episcopal Home for the Aging. Since that time, Mother's Day has been designated as an opportunity to support this vital ministry at Penick Village. The 2008 Mother's Day Offering will directly support residents who need financial assistance. Envelopes are available the pews today. For more information on the ministry of Penick Village, please feel free to contact the Development Office at 910-692-0381. Thank you for your support.

Chapel Hill Community Chorus

The Chapel Hill Community Chorus will present its spring concert this Saturday, May 17, at 8:00 pm in Memorial Hall on the UNC campus. Directed by Dr. Sue Klausmeyer, the group will present Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. Tickets are $15 for adults and $6 for students and are available at the door or from chorus members. Several parishioners sing with this group.

Next Week

Parents Of Church School Children, Take Note!

May 18 is the last day of church school for this year. Vacation Church School will be held June 23-27, 9:00 am - noon. Most VCS classes are near capacity but some spaces remain. Registration forms are outside the Christian Formation office.

The Face Of Christ: The Imprisoned

This year, about 250 Orange County inmates will be discharged from the North Carolina Department of Corrections (DOC). Because of inadequate funding, the DOC will provide little education, rehabilitation or addiction management services to these citizens. Please join Chaplain Ken Barker and parishioner Terry Johnston in the chapel on May 18 to learn how they help these prisoners prepare for freedom.

Announcements

Boy Scout Troop 9 Honors

Parish sponsored Boy Scout Troop 9 earned best overall troop at the recent Orange County District Jamboree - for the third year in a row! The scouts earned points for participation in various events, running demonstrations for younger Cub Scouts, and for their camping skills. Troop 9 is a smaller troop relative to the district and this award shows the high quality of the program. Please congratulate the scouts and the leaders. Troop 9 meets on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm. For more information visit www.t9ch.org or contact Gregg Gerdau, Scoutmaster, at gregg@gdgerdau.com.

Stewardship Opportunities

IFC News

Parishioner Elizabeth Spencer is featured in the "Donor Profile" in the spring issue of "IFC News." This gracious lady and talented writer has shared her time and financial resources with the IFC for many years. She is quoted in the article as saying, "I would like to say to others, 'Help, HELP' -- in big letters. I hope that a lot of people will give their time, money, and interest to the IFC because we have a really good thing going on here." One way to help is to bring non-perishable food to church to donate. Baskets are in the tower entrance and the office.

Sponsors Needed For Our Refugee Students

Tin Tin Win and Sein Lah, our two high schoolers, have an opportunity to visit Williamsburg VA with their chorus where they will perform. They each need to raise a sum of $30 - $130 dollars for this trip. This would be a very wonderful opportunity for them to travel with this group, perform, and see a bit of Williamsburg. We are looking for sponsors for them or to provide work for them to pay their way. Sein Lah is great doing yard work. Tin Tin Win can do ironing. Please consider helping them reach their goal by mid-May. Contact Barbara Tremblay (call office for number) or Gale Gilchrist (call office for number) for more information.

Leadership Training By The Orange Sponsoring Committee

The Orange Sponsoring Committee (OSC) held its first public assembly on April 27 with over 200 attendees from 23 churches and organizations along with 20 parishioners from Chapel of the Cross. It was an exciting beginning for this organizing group that intends to address critical issues in our area. We hope as this effort moves forward many more will become involved. The OSC is conducting a session to train members of its sponsoring organizations (which includes the Chapel of the Cross) to learn how to use relational power effectively when taking stands on community issues that affect the wellbeing of Orange County residents. Training is at 7:00 pm on May 15 at Chapel Hill Kehillah, 1200 Mason Farm Road. If you are interested contact Susannah Smith ((call office for number) or sr-smith@mindspring.com) or Peggy Pratt ((call office for number) or pegpratt@nc.rr.com).

Bible Study And Hymn Sing At Stratford Assisted Living

Looking for a lively devotional experience during the week? Thursdays at 10:30 am a group of twenty or so residents at Stratford Assisted Living gather for prayer, Bible study, and songs. This group began at the instigation of a parishioner who at the time was a resident at the Stratford. Though no longer there, she returns weekly with Vicky Jamieson-Drake for prayers, a short reflection on scripture, and singing of folk hymns accompanied by guitar. Call or email Vicky at vjd@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 if you're interested in assisting with this ministry.

Breast Cancer Support Group

Project Compassion is forming a support team to help with the needs of a relative of a parishioner being treated for breast cancer. No contribution of time is too small.
