Announcements
BACH'S LUNCH continues on this Tuesday, November 8, at 12:15 in the church,
with Dr. Michael Grant of Christ Church, Charlotte.
Annual Giving Campaign
Ingathering Sunday of the Annual Giving Campaign is Nov. 20, when
all pledges received by then are offered at the altar. As of Nov. 2,
301 pledges had been received for $677,368, including 166 who were able
to increase, 33 new pledges, and only 22 who had to decrease. Pledge
packets are available for any who need them on the track rack in the
dining room and in the tower room of the church.
12:30 Social Hour
All newcomers and students are invited for refreshments
and fellowship in the dining room following the 11:15 service. If you
would like to help with the social hour, please contact Peggy Quinn
during the social hour.
The Next Step Committee
The Next Step Committee invites parishioners to join us
for a tour of the Duke Divinity School Chapel designed by Hartman-Cox
Architects, the architects for the new master plan for Chapel of the
Cross. The tour will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 13. The
parish will meet to continue the discussion of the planning process on
Sunday, December 4, with updates after the 9:00 and 11:15 services.
Centering Prayer
The parish Centering Prayer group continues to meet Wednesdays from
5:30 to 6:45. [We spend some time in silent prayer, some time
discussing the prayer, and some time learning more about the prayer
through a video series.] All are welcome. Location alternates between
the parish library and the Rector's Conference Room. Contact person:
David Frazelle - 929-2193, dfrazelle@thechapelofthecross.org.
Another Stock Donor Sought
The unknown donor advertised in last week's Crossings has
been identified. But another stock gift of unknown origin has now been
received. As before, we need donors to identify themselves so that
their contribution records can be properly credited and so that their
gifts can be put to their intended use. Donor information is normally
not available to the receiving brokerage and must be furnished to the
Chapel of the Cross by the donor or the sending brokerage. If you have
recently donated stock to the Chapel of the Cross and have not received
an acknowledgment letter from the Treasurer, please contact Debby
Kulik, the parish accountant, or Barney Varner, the senior associate
treasurer, in the parish office at 929-2193 or
dkulik@thechapelofthecross.org or bvarner@thechapelofthecross.org so
that we may thank you and give you proper credit for your gift. Thanks
for your help.
Jesse Tree Volunteers Needed
It is time for the annual Jesse Tree-Advent
Wreath-making intergenerational event on November 27, the
First Sunday of Advent. We need helping hands to assist with bringing
greens from your yards and making three different Advent wreaths, Jesse
Tree ornaments, and selling wreath forms and candles. A complete
listing of jobs is posted on the Children and Family Ministry bulletin
board in the dining room. No talent is required. Call Gretchen at
929-2193 to sign up.
Senior Choir Openings
There are positions for three additional singers in the
senior choir. Please call Dr. Quinn if you are interested.
Greeters are Needed
Greeters are needed in November for the 11:15 and 5:15 services.
Greeters welcome newcomers and cement the Chapel of the Cross
community. If you are interested, please call: Lou Hightower.
Episcopal Youth Ministry Tonight
All 6th-12th graders are invited to EYC tonight at 5:30 in the
parlor for fun and games! Thanks for making Carnifall a huge success!
Also, come tonight for more information on the Jr. EYC retreat. It will
be overnight Friday November 18, returning on Saturday November 19. EYC
meets most Sunday nights in the parlor from 5:30 to 7:30 for dinner,
service, and fun. Bring a friend! Email Jeff Williams
Jefferson_Williams@med.unc.edu with questions.
Episcopal Campus Ministry
ECM holds their Tuesday night gathering at 5:30 p.m. with a program
and dinner for $3.
Parish Work Day a Success!
The parish workday, held last Saturday, was a huge success. Many
thanks to Alan Rimer, Bob Millikan, Authur Gregg, James Vaughan, Phil
Rees, Betsy Pringle, Ken Robinson, Bert Liverance and George Evans for
helping to heal our parish house.
UNICEF
The final count is in and our UNICEF trick-or-treaters raised $304.
Thank you for your kindness knowing the money will provide
supplementary food and blankets for more than 200 children who have
been in hurricane and earthquake regions of the world. For more
information go to www.unicefusa.org/games which tells of all the work
UNICEF does for children in need worldwide.
Mark Your Calendar
Reading With a View to Spirituality
In preparation for Advent, come join us for a discussion of
Listening to the Heartbeat of God, by Philip Newell on Saturday,
November 12, at 12:30 p.m. in the parish library. All are welcome.
Bring your book and your lunch. For more information call Raquel
Goldberg.
Children's Worship Class
November 13 is the next session of the
1st and 2nd Grade Worship Education Class.
The class will meet in the campus center during the 9:00 service. The
children will learn about different leadership roles in the service.
Additional classes are scheduled for December 4 and January 8.
One World Market
Next Sunday, November 13 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, One World Market,
a non-profit store in Durham, will be selling a collection of holiday
and non-holiday related items in the parish dining room. All items are
handmade in rural areas of developing nations around the world. One
World Market purchases these goods through Fair Trade Wholesalers, thus
providing artisans a market in the US while ensuring they are fairly
paid for their work. Profits go back into purchasing more goods. This
is a wonderful way to get a jump on holiday shopping with unique gifts
while also providing fair economic support to artists in these
developing countries. Bring your checkbook!
Short Stories, Anyone?
Insights about what it means to live our Christian faith can be
found in many places, but especially in literature. The Short Story
Reading Group meets monthly to discuss a short story since we can read
the story over the month and have really good discussions about the
text. Come join us on the third Thursday, November 17, at 7:30 pm in
the parlor, to talk about "Exodus" by James Baldwin.
Global Missions Initiative 2006
Begin now to participate in the Chapel of the Cross' Global Missions
Initiative in 2006. Join the Steering Committee after the 11:15 service
on November 20 in launching our initial projects in Africa and
Honduras. Chapel of the Cross has established relationships with a
mission to the Diocese of Cape Town, South Africa with El Hogar, an
orphanage for boys in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and with mission
coordinators in the Diocese of Honduras. With God's help and the
support of the parish next year we will begin next year to develop
these relationships in ways that will deepen the spiritual life of our
parish, strengthen our bonds to the worldwide Anglican fellowship, and
create closer ties between our parish and our African-American and
Latino neighbors at home. It will take the whole parish-as
participants-on-the-ground, as resources, as benefactors, and as prayer
partners-to fulfill this commitment to serve God and our fellow human
beings. We invite you to join us on November 20 as we take the first
step in this new direction.
Stephen Sizer to Visit Sunday, November 20
The Rev. Dr. Stephen Sizer will be back with us as our guest
preacher at 9:00 and 11:15 and the adult education speaker on November
20. Dr. Sizer is Vicar of Christ Church in Virginia Water, Surry,
England. He is an author and international lecturer on Christian
Zionism. His presentation at 10:20, November 20, is entitled Is It
Time to Think about Divestment in Israel? His lecture will be a
slide presentation depicting the plight of the Palestinian people and
how we can make a difference through morally responsible
investment.
Advent: What are We Waiting For?
Join the Spiritual Life Committee on Saturday, December 3 from 9:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the church for a day of learning, reflection, and
preparation for Advent. Father David McBriar, a Franciscan pastor and
teacher, will present his insights into the season of Advent. The
program includes personal meditation time, lunch (donations accepted),
and Eucharist. Sign up is in the parish office. For more information
contact David Dodson at ddodson@mdcinc.org
Stewardship Opportunities
Project 5000 - Pick up your box today!!
Please take a box with an attached list to fill with food
items needed by the Inter-Faith Council. Efforts to respond to Katrina
and Rita have left the IFC very low on food. We will continue the drive
until Thanksgiving. Boxes can be returned to the church on Sundays (on
the wall of the circular drive) or taken to the parish office during
the week. A box from each of us would go a long way to bolster the IFC
pantry and assist them in their mission to help those less fortunate.
If you cannot shop, cash donations are welcome; the cost to fill a box
is approximately $25.
Johnson Intern Program Trip Miles
The Johnson Intern Program, based at the Chapel of the
Cross, is up and running. In January the interns will travel to Boston
to join forces with the other seven Episcopal Internship programs
across the United States for a time of learning and contemplation. They
will be staying in Boston monasteries. Because of this, the trip is
affordable, except for airfare. They are appealing to the community for
donations of frequent flyer miles to help with the cost of this trip.
If you have miles to spare, please consider a donation to the Johnson
Intern Program by calling the office at 929-2193.

holding a series of forums across the state on death penalty reform and
the efforts to pass a two-year moratorium on executions in North
Carolina. One such forum will be held at the Chapel of the Cross on
Monday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. The Social Ministry Committee has a

use by interested groups or individuals. Contact Peggy Pratt at
pegpratt@nc.rr.com if you would like to review them. If you would like
more information or to get involved in the efforts of People of Faith
against the Death Penalty, contact their office in Carrboro at 933-7567
