C H A P E L   H I L L   A S T R O N O M I C A L   A N D   O B S E R V A T I O N A L   S O C I E T Y


Article I: Name The organization shall be known as Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society.

Article II: Purpose To promote activites designed to increase the knowledge of its membership in the science of modern astronomy and in the technologies related to it. To promote and foster the exchange of information with other organizations engaged in similar activities. To promote the public interest in astronomy.

Article III: Membership Membership shall be open to anyone of any age who exhibits a sincere interest in the purposes and objectives of the organization. A minimum membership fee must be paid each year to maintain membership within the organization. Any member may have his membership revoked for violation of any of the conditions of the membership established in the By-Laws, or for an infraction of the Safety Code of the organization.

Article IV: Officers The officers of the organization shall consist of the President, the Vice President, the Secretary, and the Treasurer. These officers shall constitute the Executive Committee. This committee shall meet at the beginning of each semester or at the call of the President. The committee will be responsible for recruitment of donations from business organizations and other organizations, for general advertising of the Club and Club activities, and in developing long-range proposals to be brought to the full membership for consideration.

Article V: Meetings Meetings of the general membership shall be held monthly or at the call of the President at a place designated by the President.

Article VI: Operations The organization shall conduct such operations as are consonant with its aims and objectives, the abilities of its members and the limitations of its funds and physical facilities, to include: research projects, lectures, observing sessions, discussions, and other astronomy-related activites.

Article VII: Funds The organization shall derive its funds from the assessment of regular dues and from donations it may solicit from business organizations or other agencies at the discretion of the Executive Committee.
All monies of the Society must be distributed according to a budget which is to be proposed by the Executive Committee and passed by a simple majority of the membership. Each budget shall dictate how all monies are to be spent over one fiscal year.

Article VIII: Amendments The constitution of the Society may be amended by a 2/3 vote of the full membership. Such a vote for an amendment can take place at a meeting, or through mail or email as suits the majority of the membership.
