NCAEA Announces Awards Recipients

The North Carolina Adult Education Association has announced this year’s NCAEA Awards Program recipients. NCAEA membership includes adult educators and administrators from two-year and four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, Area Health Education Centers, the NC Agricultural Extension Service, and other organizations with adult educators, private practitioners, and adult education students. The NCAEA annual awards honor professionals and programs making significant contributions to the field of adult education and to adult students.

The NCAEA Grumman Award recognizes an individual who has made significant lifelong contributions to the field of adult education. This year’s recipient is Dr. James Sadler, Associate Vice President for Academic Planning for the University of North Carolina. Dr. Sadler is honored for his work as a leading force in the UNC System’s outreach to adult students in North Carolina, and for his tireless commitment to providing greater access to degree opportunities for adult students across the State.

The NCAEA Service Award recognizes distinguished service by an adult education practitioner. NCAEA is honoring Dr. Ralph Hall, Professor of Leadership and Educational Studies at Appalachian State University. Dr. Hall began teaching at Appalachian in 1974 and served as chair of the Department of Administration, Supervision and Higher Education, now the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies, from 1978-1985. Hall teaches courses in public school law, higher education law, leadership theory and sport law. During his 30 year career at ASU he has frequently traveled to off-campus sites to teach adult students.

NCAEA’s Malcolm S. Knowles Award honors persons or groups who exhibit outstanding dedication to the purposes and objectives of adult education. This year’s recipient is Dr. J. Edward Smith, Vice President for Workforce Development and Continuing Education at Tri-County Community College. Dr. Smith has dedicated his 33 year career to designing, planning and providing programs for adult learners. He has worked with a wide range of individuals, from high school athletes to Elderhostel participants.

The three awards were presented at the 2005 NCAEA Annual Conference in New Bern on October 10th.
