NCAEA Announces Awards
Recipients
The North Carolina Adult Education Association has announced
this year’s NCAEA Awards Program recipients. NCAEA membership
includes adult educators and administrators from two-year and
four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, Area
Health Education Centers, the NC Agricultural Extension Service,
and other organizations with adult educators, private practitioners,
and adult education students. The NCAEA annual awards honor professionals
and programs making significant contributions to the field of
adult education and to adult students.
The NCAEA Grumman Award recognizes an individual who has made
significant lifelong contributions to the field of adult education.
This year’s recipient is Dr. James Sadler, Associate Vice
President for Academic Planning for the University of North Carolina.
Dr. Sadler is honored for his work as a leading force in the UNC
System’s outreach to adult students in North Carolina, and
for his tireless commitment to providing greater access to degree
opportunities for adult students across the State.
The NCAEA Service Award recognizes distinguished service by an
adult education practitioner. NCAEA is honoring Dr. Ralph Hall,
Professor of Leadership and Educational Studies at Appalachian
State University. Dr. Hall began teaching at Appalachian in 1974
and served as chair of the Department of Administration, Supervision
and Higher Education, now the Department of Leadership and Educational
Studies, from 1978-1985. Hall teaches courses in public school
law, higher education law, leadership theory and sport law. During
his 30 year career at ASU he has frequently traveled to off-campus
sites to teach adult students.
NCAEA’s Malcolm S. Knowles Award honors persons or groups
who exhibit outstanding dedication to the purposes and objectives
of adult education. This year’s recipient is Dr. J. Edward
Smith, Vice President for Workforce Development and Continuing
Education at Tri-County Community College. Dr. Smith has dedicated
his 33 year career to designing, planning and providing programs
for adult learners. He has worked with a wide range of individuals,
from high school athletes to Elderhostel participants.
The three awards were presented at the 2005 NCAEA Annual Conference
in New Bern on October 10th.
